You love someone with a substance use disorder and it is affecting you.
Family Counseling for Addiction
Support for families and loved ones affected by a substance use and abuse.
You did not cause it, and you cannot control it. You matter here too.
What Is Family Counseling for Addiction?
Family counseling for addiction is support for the people who love someone with a substance use disorder. I provide it in Ashland, VA and online across Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, Washington DC, and South Carolina. Addiction is a family experience. You did not cause it, and you cannot control it. You matter here too.
I am Dr. Chris Coleman, a licensed substance abuse treatment provider and counselor with more than 20 years walking families through recovery. You do not need to be of the Christian faith to be here. Faith is offered, never forced.
Does This Sound Like You?
- You are walking on eggshells, waiting for the next crisis
- You have covered, bailed out, or made excuses, and it keeps happening
- You have lost sleep, savings, or yourself trying to help
- The whole family feels organized around their using
- You want to help without losing yourself in it
What I Help With
Boundaries that hold. Setting limits that protect you and still leave room for love.
Enabling and codependency. Seeing the patterns that keep everyone stuck.
Communication. Talking honestly without it turning into a fight.
Supporting recovery. How to encourage treatment without carrying it for them.
Your own healing. Space for the toll this has taken on you.
Rebuilding trust. Repair, at a realistic pace, when someone is in recovery.
How I Approach Your Care
The family is the focus. The work looks at the whole system, not only the person who is using.
Practical and honest. I give you real tools and straight answers, not blame.
Faith welcomed, not forced. Biblical principles are part of my approach when you want them, and never when you do not.
Rooted in experience. More than 20 years in substance use treatment informs how I help families.
Honest and direct, with compassion. If it causes a problem, then it is a problem. I will tell you the truth and walk it with you.

Family Counseling for Addiction FAQs
How can family counseling help with a loved one's addiction?
Family counseling helps you set healthy boundaries, change patterns that keep everyone stuck, and support recovery without losing yourself. I work with individuals and families affected by a loved one’s substance use.
What is codependency?
Codependency is when your wellbeing gets so tied to another person that you lose sight of your own needs. In family counseling, those patterns get named, and healthier ones take their place.
How do I support someone in recovery?
You can encourage treatment, hold firm boundaries, and take care of yourself, without carrying their recovery for them. I will help you find that balance.
Can family recovery counseling be done online?
Yes. Family counseling is available in person in Ashland, VA and online across Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, Washington DC, and South Carolina.
Do you take insurance?
Yes. Insurance is accepted through Headway, including Aetna, Cigna, Anthem/BCBS, United Health/Optum, Carefirst, Carelon Behavioral Health, and some Kaiser plans, along with private pay.
