You are a service member, veteran, first responder, or nurse, 18 or older.
First Responder Counseling
Confidential counseling for military members, veterans, first responders, and nurses.
Your service does not have to cost you yourself.
Counseling for Those Who Serve
I provide counseling for military members, veterans, first responders, and nurses in Ashland, VA and online across Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, Washington DC, and South Carolina. Care focuses on trauma, PTSD, job stress, and the toll of carrying other people’s worst days.
I am Dr. Chris Coleman, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and licensed counselor with more than 20 years in trauma and substance use. What you say here stays here, within the limits of the law. You do not need to be of the Christian faith to be here. Faith is offered, never forced.
What This Is, and What It Is Not
I provide confidential counseling and trauma care. I do not perform fit-for-duty, return-to-work, or disability evaluations. I do not complete SSI, SSDI, workers compensation, or military evaluation paperwork. If you need a fitness or disability evaluation, I will point you toward a provider who does that work.
Does This Sound Like You?
- When you try to rest, the calls, scenes, or deployments replay in your mind
- You feel numb, on edge, or quick to anger off duty
- Your sleep is broken, and the drinking has crept up
- You keep it together at work and fall apart at home
- You would tell a buddy to get help, but not yourself
What I Help With
Post-traumatic stress and trauma. Care for what the job or service left behind. See Trauma Therapy.
Critical incidents and moral injury. The calls and decisions that do not sit right.
Burnout and compassion fatigue. When the tank is empty and everything feels like too much.
Substance use. When alcohol or drugs became the way to cope. See Substance Abuse Counseling.
Anger and irritability. A short fuse that follows you home. See Anger Management.
Relationship and family strain. Reconnecting with the people who waited.
How I Approach Your Care
I get the weight of the work. You will not have to explain what the job does to a person.
Confidential. What you share stays private, within the limits of the law, and records go out only with a release you sign.
Trauma-informed and evidence-based. I use trauma-informed care and cognitive processing approaches, at a pace you set.
Faith welcomed, not forced. Biblical principles are part of my approach when you want them, and never when you do not.
Honest and direct, with compassion. If it causes a problem, then it is a problem. I will tell you the truth and walk it with you.
This May Be a Good Fit If:
The job is following you home, into your sleep, mood, or relationships.
You want confidential support, in person or online.
What Can Change
The scenes stop hijacking your rest.
You are present with your family again.
The drinking or the anger loosens its hold.
You carry the work without it carrying you.
