Substance Abuse Counseling
Evidence-based counseling for substance use and co-occurring disorders, grounded in faith and built on more than 20 years of addiction treatment.
You do not need to be of the Christian faith to be here. Faith is offered, never forced.
What Is Substance Abuse Counseling?
Substance abuse counseling is evidence-based treatment for substance use and co-occurring disorders. I offer it in Ashland, VA and online across Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, Washington DC, and South Carolina. Care follows the ASAM criteria, so the level of care matches what you need. I offer individual, group, and family sessions.
My name is Dr. Chris Coleman. I am a licensed substance abuse treatment provider, a Master Addiction Counselor, and a DOT Substance Abuse Professional, with more than 20 years in this field. I have worked in jails, drug court, community services boards, and inpatient and outpatient programs. I know recovery from many sides. That matters here.

What I Help With
Alcohol use. From heavy or risky drinking to alcohol dependence, with honest assessment and a plan.
Drugs and prescription misuse. Support for opioids, stimulants, and other substances, matched to your history and needs.
Co-occurring disorders. When substance use travels with anxiety, depression, trauma, or mood disorders, both are addressed.
Relapse and early recovery. Relapse prevention, intervention, and support as you step down from a higher level of care.
Family and relationships. Family sessions for loved ones affected by a substance use disorder. See Family Counseling.
Substance use assessments. Evidence-based biopsychosocial assessment to find the right level of care. For DUI and DOT SAP evaluations, see DUI & DOT SAP.
How I Approach Your Care
It starts with an honest assessment. I use evidence-based assessment tools to understand your history, your health, and your goals, then match care to the ASAM level you need.
Evidence-based, with faith if you want it. I draw on motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and relapse-prevention skills, and I integrate biblical principles when you welcome them.
The whole person. Substance use, mental health, relationships, and spirit are addressed as a whole, because they rarely move alone.
Honest and direct, with compassion. If it causes a problem, then it is a problem. I will tell you the truth and walk it with you.
The right level of care. If you need more than outpatient support, I will make referrals and help you get there. Your safety comes first.

Substance Abuse Counseling FAQs
What is substance use disorder treatment?
Substance use disorder treatment is evidence-based care for problems with alcohol or drugs, often alongside mental health support. It can include individual counseling, group sessions, family work, and assessment for the right level of care.
How does outpatient addiction counseling work?
Outpatient counseling lets you live at home while you attend regular sessions. I use the ASAM criteria to set how often sessions happen and adjust as your recovery changes.
What are co-occurring disorders?
Co-occurring disorders are when a substance use disorder and a mental health condition, like anxiety, depression, or trauma, happen together. Treating both at once gives recovery a stronger footing.
Can I do substance abuse counseling online in Virginia?
Yes. Substance abuse counseling is available in person in Ashland, VA and online across Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, Washington DC, and South Carolina. Some services, like in-office drug screens, are in person only.
Do you take insurance?
Yes. Insurance is accepted through Headway, including Aetna, Cigna, Anthem/BCBS, United Health/Optum, Carefirst, Carelon Behavioral Health, and some Kaiser plans, along with private pay.
